Aha! moment

Quite a few years ago - before I had met my husband - I was in college and had made a friend in one of my classes. He was engaged to a woman, whom I didn't know but whom he talked about regularly. The other classmates and I could tell he was very excited about this time in his life and all that was to come, as he embarked on the adventure of married life.

One day when several of us were waiting in line at the library, he said to me, "People always say that you know you've met the right person when you can imagine living the rest of your life with them...no...I believe that you know you've met the right person when you can't imagine living the rest of your life without them."

I agreed with him in the moment...but it wasn't until I let it sit for a while that I realized not only the truth in his statement, but also the positive spin on something that we have created such a stigma around. We view marriage as this commitment that may (but just as likely may not) work out. So, we try to find someone who we think we can make it work with...rather than waiting for our wonderful match in life and realizing that (though it will be challenging at times, to say that least) I can't imagine going through ups and downs with anyone else!

How refreshing! Is that how you view your groom-to-be? I think if we restructured our thoughts about our significant other, we (and he) would be a lot happier and a lot more optimistic about our future together!
